A flatbed scanner works by shining light onto an object and reading the intensity and color of light reflected from it, scanning the surface one line at a time. Most commonly used for document registration, the scanner is a tool characterized by precision and accuracy.

As part of the process of Lightwave, raw materials were placed on the flatbed surface and dragged along the sensor as it registered light. When transforming the physical object into its digital representation, the resulting images are distorted and warped into obscurity, unrecognizable from their original source.
